The Hokkoku Shimbun Celebrates its 113th Anniversary in 2006. This figure indicates that the Hokkoku Shimbun has one of the longest histories in the Japanese press and shares the history of Japanese modernization since the Meiji era. As the Japanese history of modernization shows continuous turbulence, the Hokkoku Shimbun has taken a thorny path until today. In its long history, the Hokkoku Shimbun has been watching overseas and domestic trends carefully while keeping a close eye on the local communities at all times. The world is becoming smaller and smaller due to the development of the information network including INTERNET. We wish for our readers the best use of the Hokkoku through this "home page". We hope it will help them read the world from a local area or vice versa, thus reaching the next era from a standpoint of "global localism".

The Hokkoku Shimbun
Hokkoku Shimbun was founded on August 5, 1893. In those days, democratic rights movements were flourishing and there were many political, argumentative papers . In that environment, many of them became only tools for the political party interests. Hokkoku Shimbun had declared impartiality and independence of any parties and raised a curtain of modern journalism at the press of Hokuriku region. The world has changed through the Meiji, Taisho, Showa and Heisei eras, but the ideal policy of the foundation has not changed. Hokkoku Shimbun has grown along with the people of the Hokuriku region as the representative paper and has mirrored the world and Japanese modern history.

In 1979, Hokkoku Shimbun planned a fast computerized editing system. In 1981, Hokkoku Shimbun started "HELLOS" which was the first computerized full page editing system in Japan and issued quick, accurate and beautiful newspapers for subscribers. In 1991, Mr.Hidekazu Tobita took office as the President of Hokkoku Shimbun and made an effort to establish the multimedia information industry around newspaper as the second foundation stage of Hokkoku Shimbun.

In the same year, the Hokkoku Shimbun Kaikan which has twenty-one stories was completed and Toyama Shimbun Kaikan which has seven stories was completed in the following year. The Hokkoku Shimbun has been tied up with the L'EST REPUBLICAIN of Nancy City, France, Suzhow Daily News of Suzhow City, China, JORNAL DO NIKKEY of Sao Paulo, Brasil and exchanged articles and reporters. In addition to that, The Hokkoku Shimbun has cooperation agreement with ITAR-TASS of Moscow City, Ruussia. Hokkoku Shimbun issues about 341,000 morning papers (including those of Toyama Shimbun) and about 92,000 evening papers daily. The morning paper subscription covers about 70% of all in Ishikawa Prefecture. It indicates that about 7 out of 10 families subscribe to Hokkoku Shimbun.
